New Helper (advice please)

You might recall my selection of ‘helpers’ in the garden – Bruno and Barney the bears, Titchmarsh the frog and the others. With the purchase of the piece of next door’s garden last year, poor Bruno couldn’t cope with all the extra responsibility so I decided I needed to get some more assistance.

Last week at the Chelsea Flower Show, I was visiting the stands and saw just what I was looking for and made the purchase. Earlier today, my new helper was delivered.

This is how it looks now it has been placed in the ‘Bit On The Side’

Once the surrounding shrubs have grown a bit, my new helper will not look so exposed.

Now this is where I need your advice. I have decided to name it after one of the two guides on my holidays to South Africa but I can’t decide whether it’s a male or a female giraffe. What do you think? By the end of play on Sunday, I’ll count up the votes and let you know the name of my new helper.

it is def a male, you can tell by the way hes looking at the garden!! A woman would just get on with what needs doing ha ha ha

I really like the Giraffe Andrew - they like Acacia trees apparently - females have tufts of hair on their short horns -- males are bare topped if that helps you decide ! I would think of it as female for no obvious reason.

...I thought female as soon as I looked at it...... "She's" a nice addition Andrew...

I thought its a young male. When he's half hidden in shrubs the visitors will love it suddenly peeping out at them.

Gracie went through my mind as I looked at her :o)

I thought you were going to entertain us with a story of how you had to bring the giraffe home on the London Tube ... via Elephant and Castle ? ;o)

She is lovely standing there deciding what needs to be moved.

She is definitely too demure to be male! ;)

I think it's a he,his horns look larger than a girls.
I hope he doesn't stand there too long he might get something twining up his legs !!

i think a female, so cute and eligant andrew, lovely infact, love your new area to, just one thing but im no expert, im not sure about the centre pot, dont know why just seems lost, will that grow taller, tell me to shut up its ok lol, i love your garden anyway ;o)

TT - well a seven foot giraffe would be easier than a ten foot delphimium!

Sanbaz - the central pot contains a cycad which I hope (winters permitting) will get a lot bigger. As it's quite a nasty thing to handle - the fronds are quite hard and scratchy - I've planted it in a big pot rather than trying to move it a future date

i knew it must get bigger, going to look it up so i can see what its like now, i would have had a flamboyant pot, but then again im a girl haha, im sure it will look great when its established, hope my comment didnt upset you andrew ,
ps just looked it up, great centre piece plant ;o))

Definitely female Andrew, she has that look of charm and coquettishness about her.

I adore your helper Andrew - what material is it made of? I fancy a pair of storks for by my pond, did the stand have anything like that? Thanks, Dawn

2 Jun, 2010

Dawn - it's "hand crafted in Zimbabwe...from recycled metal oil drums coated in a lacquer finish". The company has a website at www.zimbolic.co.uk

Andrew. I've checked the website, they have some wonderful sculptures, they have pairs of cranes and herons, just what I need. Thank you.

Dawn - it's a good website isn't it? For some reason, I always though a giraffe would look good in my 'Bit On The Side' but had almost given up hope of finding one until I found the company's display at Chelsea this year

5 Jun, 2010

It's a girl! - ... and Terratoonie's right - must be Gladys!

6 Jun, 2010

Hi Andrew, they have some great sculptures and I'm pleased you found a giraffe. Love the crocodile too. I'll keep a note of the website, thank you.
