Good lady and her freind chatting away nicely, Tiny chirping contently so i found it unfortunate that the birds(on rear lawn) had emptied their feeders exceptionally quick. Robins looking great, blue tits (very large)and many other small birds ready for lunch. A new seed feeder seems to be earning its due as i half filled it 2 days ago and now is empty. Replaced 4 new grease balls and put a lot more seed in the feeder. Hid in my palace (Shed) and viewed the near riot as i realized why the new feeder had emptied so rapidley. I managed with great difficulty to estimate around 30 to 40 birds descended in less than 5 minuets. Onto the washing line then attacking the food ferociously. I decided not to leave my shed whilst they were eating lunch it would,nt have been jolly hockey sticks would it?. On the other hand the poor little chaps may have made a Menue of me. All is fine now, regular feeder checks will be made. Hope all is well in your gardens. Take care Tony

what sort of birds are they?

When they descend in droves like that it doesn`t take long to empty the feeders Tony, I know I have a lot more space in my garden than you but I find that if I spread the feeders around the food doesn`t get eaten in one foul swoop, might be worth a try if you have anywhere you could hang another feeder, the starlings are the greediest and just keep at it until emptied, another reason why I hide some of them for my little birds...

I bet they were starlings Tony. I have all different feeders around our garden, but this year for the first time magpies (which I'm not keen on) have been coming to the table.I love that picture you got of the blue tit, and doesn't your greenhouse look spick and span. I take it all back (previous page),you can multi-task, well a bit anyhow!lol

Hi Linclass Thankyou for tip to spread feeders about and i will try that. The seed is a high protein mix made by a private firm. They eat it and have the energy to come back frequentley. Its like an aviary on the lawn every breakfast time. Take care enjoy Tony

Hello Tony! We've found the same as Lincs, if the starlings find a full feeder they'll not leave until they've emptied it! As for the blimmin' crows! They'll hang off it until they break it, and then eat what's scattered on the ground. We've put our feeders into a big buddleia so only the tiny birds can see and get to them, also the seed falls on rough ground so it doesn't make as much of a mess! You'll have to get a bird book out of the library, Tony, and see what you're feeding! It's a wonder Muffin isn't sitting under the bird table with his mouth hanging open catching the crumbs!!

I would like to tell you all what happened the other day.Came in the room to find hubby laughing his socks off. Outside on the lawn was 3 pigeons, 2 squirrels , a solitary magpie and all the smaller birds on feeders. one of the squirrels turned on the magpie, and we have never seen anything like it,( a proper candid camera moment) and its a pity I never had mine at the ready. This said squirrel actually threw himself at the magpie and it was just like watching two wrestlers in a ring. All of a sudden ,the squirrel jumped high in the air and actually butted this magpie.Needless to say , the magpie made a hasty retreat! All the rest of the birds just carried on eating as if nothing had happened.

hi Rose A free for all on your lawn (LoL). Are,nt animals funny though. Never seen a squirrel attacking other feeders though. I know squirrels are classed as vermin but i do have a limited respect for them since i veiwed one balancing along our washing line and breaking into a plastic feeder. Marvelouse feat without a doubt. Pigeons are a neusance here but i hope to discourage them next year. Take care Rose Tony

Haha! Rose! I'd pay good money to see that! Wasn't that squirrel bold, I'm surprised it got the better of the magpie, they're usually such scrappers!
I know what you mean about a grudging respect for the squirrels, Tony, when you see them being so clever and ingenious in their solutions to breaking and entering the bird feeders, you think to yourself, Awww, when you realise the contents of the same said feeder is now scattered hither and yon, you think to yourself, ARGH! Lol!

Isn't it typical that you haven't got a camera handy when you need one!I normally find that the squirrel can knock the feeder onto the ground and the fox comes along and nicks it.This is true, I actually saw it!

hi Rose Naughty fox. Very destructive animal but extremeley attractive coats. We don,t see many here these days but cats are increasing in numbers. Take care Tony
