Can anyone identify this tree, saw it in burford garden centre, had a lot of interest for winter. Small clusters of white berries and twisted branches, they said it was a sorbus but not what variety

I agree with Bamboo. I have Sorbus cashmiriana although mine was stripped of most of the berries a couple of weeks ago.

Squidging the berries is a lovely gelatinous experience.

I believe it's White Baneberry (Actaea pachypoda). It's also known as Doll's Eyes. The berries and the whole plant are toxic

I don't think its Actaea - that's a soft stemmed perennial, not a woody tree, though the berries are vaguely similar.

check out the photos of sorbus cashmiriana on this link. There are several photos and one shows the straggly flowering/berry stems as seen in your photo. https://www.primrose.co.uk/5ft-kashmir-rowan-tree-bare-root-sorbus-cashmiriana-p-103225.html

I don't know of a variety of Sorbus with contorted or twisted branches, but from the berries, it might be Sorbus cashmiriana (Kashmir rowan)
